Dr. Robert Werner, Geography Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the author of an article, “Dakota Diaspora after 1862,” which was published in the July issue of Minnesota’s Heritage, a journal devoted to scholarship about the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Werner’s article maps the dispersal of the Dakota people after the war to Iowa, Nebraska the Dakotas, Montana, Saskatchewan and Manitoba from 1862 to settlement on reservations (U.S.) and reserves (Canada) into the 1880s. One map from the article is on display at the “U.S.-Dakota War of 1862” exhibit at the Minnesota History Center. Other maps will be on the Minnesota Historical Society website and on display at Fort Snelling.
