Dr. Thomas Endres, Communication Department, attended the Central States Communication Association (CSCA) convention, held April 5-8 in Cincinnati, Ohio. In addition to serving as the Minnesota state representative to the CSCA States Advisory Council, he was a panel participant on the topics of "Maximizing Professional Opportunities: Membership Benefits for Communication Teachers and Scholars" and "Lambda Pi Eta, the National Communication Honor Society: Nurturing the Future of the Communication Field." In addition, he presented a position paper titled "Student Rights and Responsibilities: Practicing Unconditional Courtesy" and was a respondent to a panel, "Reflecting or Creating Community? Rhetorical Studies of Mediated Discourse."
Dr. Ameeta Jaiswal-Dale, Finance Department, and Dr. Sally Power, Management Department, had their paper, "Globalization and .com: The Impact on the Worker, a Comparative Study of the American and French Economies," published in The Global Economy Quarterly, Vol. 1, No. 4, December 2000.
Dr. Meg Wilkes Karraker, Sociology Department, presented a paper, "But Theory is the 'Real World'! Learning Through Applications," at the annual meetings of the Midwest Sociological Society in St. Louis. Karraker also contributed discussion remarks to a session on sociology of the family at the same meetings.
Dr. Jeff McLean and Dr. Kurt Scholz, Mathematics Department, attended the spring meeting of the North Central Section of the Mathematical Association of America April 6-7 at Gustavus Adolphus College. The main address on Saturday was a preliminary report from the Committee on the Undergraduate Program in Mathematics on recommendations for the future.
Dr. Peter Parilla and Dr. Susan Smith-Cunnien, Sociology Department, attended the annual meetings of the Midwest Sociological Society in St. Louis. Parilla presented a paper on "Internships in Sociology: Balancing Competing Demands." He and Smith-Cunnien were co-authors of another paper, "Teaching Restorative Justice," presented at the meetings. Smith-Cunnien also presented a paper on "Resources for Getting Out the Sociological Word."
Dr. Fred Zimmerman, Manufacturing Systems and Engineering Department, wrote the lead Business Forum article published in the Star Tribune on Monday, April 9. The title of the article was "Hardly Working," which Zimmerman sincerely hopes will not be seen as indicative of his department.
