Sacred Arts Festival donates mezuzah to Ireland library

The University of St. Thomas Sacred Arts Festival has donated to the Archbishop Ireland Memorial Library a mezuzah by Minneapolis artist Sandra Brick. It is now displayed on the doorway leading into the library's main reference room.

A mezuzah is small parchment inscribed with two passages from the Torah's Book of Deuteronomy (6:4-9 and 11:13-21). Encased in a small box or container, it's affixed to the doorpost or gate of a Jewish home or business as a symbol for God's watchful care over the building and those who enter. Jews often give artistic mezuzot as gifts for special occasions.

Brick, whose works were featured in a festival exhibit last year, is a Jewish artist who works in textiles and beading. She also produces heirlooms and works of art for Jewish daily life. Her other works can be seen at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, fine art galleries and shops.
