Did you know?
- According to U.S Census Bureau figures, 15 percent of Minnesota children (about 190,000) were living in poverty last year, an increase of about 18,000 from 2009.
- In 2010, Hunger Solutions found that 39 percent of visits to food shelves were for children under 18 and another nine percent were made by the elderly.
- From 2008 to 2010, visits to food shelves increased by 62 percent statewide, according to Hunger Solutions. In the nine-county Twin Cities metropolitan area the jump was an even more startling 97 percent.
By participating in the Campbell Soup Co. “Let’s Can Hunger" challenge, UST's Students in Free Enterprise, (SIFE) will help people in need by collecting its goal of at least 5,000 pounds of food this year.
Collection boxes for nonperishable food donations are set up through noon Thursday, March 15, in the following locations:
- McNeely Hall, Room 128 (In addition to food, monetary donations may be brought to UST SIFE adviser Betsy Lofgren at this location.)
- O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center
- Aquinas Hall, first-floor hall
Cash donations are tax deductible; write checks payable to Second Harvest Heartland. All donations will go to Second Harvest.
