Movie 'Like Water for Chocolate' screened Nov. 20
STAR invites you to a showing of the 1993 movie, "Like Water for Chocolate," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, in Room 126, John R. Roach Center for the Liberal Arts. The free movie showing will be accompanied by food from Boca Chica Restaurante Mexicano.
"Like Water for Chocolate" is based on the novel of the same title by Laura Esquivel. A love story set in Mexico, it centers on a young woman, Tita, who discovers that her cooking has magical effects.
Because of Mexican tradition, Pedro, the man she loves, marries Tita's older sister. Then, Tita's sadness infects her cooking. Everyone who eats it feels her heartbreak with the same intensity. Interwoven throughout the narrative, the recipes provide an ongoing metaphorical commentary on the characters and their culture during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-17.
Originally published in 1990, "Like Water for Chocolate" (" Como agua para chocolate") won international acclaim. The film, based on the book, swept the Ariel awards of the Mexican Academy of Motion Pictures, winning 11 in all, and went on to become one of the largest-grossing foreign film ever released in the United States.
