Dr. Alfred Marcus will speak at the Association for Strategic Planning 2011 Spring Breakfast Series on Tuesday, March 22. Marcus is professor and Edson Spencer Endowed Chair in Strategy and Technological Leadership at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota. His topic for the breakfast talk is “Strategic Foresight: A New Look at Scenarios.”

Marcus will discuss how decision makers should imagine multiple possibilities. Predicting futures is less useful than shaping better futures. He will cover the principles, methods and techniques businesses can use for looking into the future and trying to influence what is to come next.
Given uncertain outcomes, what strategies should businesses adopt? The speaker provides guidance on how to think systematically about constructing scenarios in a number of important areas, including: demography, security, politics, macro-economics, energy, the environment and technology.
Marcus teaches and conducts research in strategic management, macroeconomics, business ethics, and business and the natural environment. He has been chair of the Carlson School’s Strategic Management and Organization Department, director of the Carlson School’s Strategic Management Research Center, and a visiting professor at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and at the Norwegian School of Management.
Marcus earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University and undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of Chicago. From 1975-76, he was a research consultant at the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C. He is the author or editor of eight books, including Reinventing Environmental Regulation (with Donald Geffen and Ken Sexton). His articles have appeared in journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Academy of Management Review and The Journal of Forecasting.
Registration will begin at 7 a.m. followed by breakfast and networking. The presentation and discussion will be held from 7:45 to 9 a.m. in Room 202, Opus Hall, Minneapolis campus.
