Susan Chaplin named director of Faculty Development at St. Thomas

I am very pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Sue Chaplin as the next director of Faculty Development at the University of St. Thomas. She will serve a three-year term beginning on July 1, 2007. Dr. Chaplin will take over from Dr. Robert Riley, who will have served the maximum of six years as director.

Dr. Sue Chaplin

Dr. Chaplin has been a professor in the Department of Biology at St. Thomas since 1990. She previously has served as chair of that department and as director of the Division of Sciences and Mathematics. A Ph.D. alumna of Cornell University, Dr. Chaplin has received grants from the National Science Foundation, the Council for Undergraduate Research, and the Bush Foundation, as well as being an active participant in many programs of the Faculty Development Center.

Professor Greg Robinson-Riegler, who chaired the faculty committee that reviewed applications and made recommendations to me, states that “the committee was impressed with Dr. Chaplin’s depth and breadth of experience, as well as her creativity, energy and passion.” I agree that Dr. Chaplin will bring energy and a broad, collaborative vision to the position. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Chaplin on her coming appointment as director of Faculty Development.
