ThreeSixty Journalism, a nonprofit youth journalism program based at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, seeks Minnesota teens who want to learn how to ask questions and tell true stories using words, photos and video.
Starting March 1, ThreeSixty Journalism will host a News Team, a 10-week after-school program that trains teens in basic journalism skills – interviewing, researching and writing a story for publication. News Team students work with ThreeSixty staff and professional journalists to write and illustrate stories that matter to them and their peers.
The weekly meetings will provide onsite training from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pioneer Press in St. Paul on Mondays and Star Tribune in Minneapolis on Tuesdays. There's no charge to participate and bus cards are available to those who need them. News Team applications are available at the ThreeSixty Web site; application deadline is Feb. 24.
Applications are also available for two ThreeSixty summer camps held on the St. Thomas campus.
- The Intermediate Camp – June 13-25: An intense, two-week, residential camp designed for 9th- 12th graders. Students live in college dorms and work with other Minnesota teens to produce a newspaper and other media, including podcasts and videos.
- Introduction to journalism – July 6-30: Meets 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Mondays through Thursdays for four weeks to teach teens completing 8th through 11th grade the basics of journalism.
Applications for News Team and summer camps can be downloaded on the ThreeSixty Web site. The most committed students from News Team and summer camps will be invited to work on ThreeSixty’s on-line magazine.
Teens who participate in ThreeSixty programs work closely with journalists from daily newspapers and television and radio stations in the Twin Cities. Many ThreeSixty alumni have received journalism scholarships, internships and awards and have entered careers in journalism and communications.
ThreeSixty Journalism brings diverse voices into journalism and related professions by using intense personal instruction in the practice and principles of journalism to strengthen the civic literacy, writing skills and college-readiness of Minnesota teens.
