  • "Tough odds, strong kids," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Nov. 7, 2007. The [Optimist Club] awards, which will be presented Thursday evening at a formal dinner, are given to low-income and college-aspiring city kids who are doing well in school while overcoming or struggling with compelling odds. Five area schools - Augsburg College, the College of St. Catherine, Hamline University, Macalester College and the University of St. Thomas - continue to pledge to annually match and renew the award amount for any of the recipients who are admitted to and attend their institutions. Most of the other 13 award winners are excelling in high school while dealing with physical disabilities, mental illness, murders or the deaths of parents or siblings, their own crime victimizations and other obstacles. https://www.twincities.com//ci_7389229

  • "On public pocket-picking, planes, pounds and more ..." St. Paul Pioneer Press, Nov. 9, 2007. "Opinionettes: We send our warmest congratulations to Denise Johnson. She is an editorial writer for the Star Tribune who was previously a reporter and writer for the Pioneer Press. We know Denise Johnson as a great person, a great journalist and a great mentor. She will be honored by ThreeSixty, a journalism training program that focuses on minority youth. Johnson was a member of the first class, when it was known as the Urban Journalism Workshop, and she has long been active with the organization. The award is called 'Widening the Circle' and we thank Denise Johnson for doing just that in a field that needs the broadest possible participation.
