Here's a roundup of recent St. Thomas mentions of interest in various media. Read the stories by clicking on the links.   • "Open for Business: Marco V Cigars," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Aug. 26, 2009. Company owner Marc Keiser said, "I graduated from the University of St. Thomas Entrepreneurial Studies Program, where I was given the tools to create a business plan. I created it at the Business Plan Center in St. Paul and had help from mentors at S.C.O.R.E., the cigar industry and my cigar factory owner in the Dominican Republic. It took four years to complete the plan and develop our three cigar blends."
  • "After layoffs, Park Nicollet again sees profits, rise in patients," Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal, Aug. 28, 2009. "Daniel McLaughlin, director of the University of St. Thomas’ Center for Health and Medical Affairs, said finances have been improving for hospital systems across the country, but said Park Nicollet officials deserved some credit for improving the health system’s numbers.”

  • "Misconceptions of HGH (human growth hormone)," Examiner.com, Aug. 31, 2009. The author writes, "I exchanged emails with John T. Wendt, Associate Professor in the Ethics and Business Law Department of the University of St. Thomas, on the subject. Professor Wendt specializes in sports law and Olympic policies and business. His latest published work in the winter of ’09 was titled, 'The Road to Beijing and Beyond: A Time of Transition in the War on Doping.'"
  • "Durenberger renews his hope that health care reform is ahead," Star Tribune, Sept. 1, 2009. "On one of the last days of August, David Durenberger sat in his quiet, sunny office at the University of St. Thomas in Minneapolis and talked about how August was the month that changed his mind."
  • “Republican National Convention's record payout is scheduled to help people in need, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Sept. 1, 2009. "The RNC economic-benefit study was performed by Dave Brennan, a University of St. Thomas marketing professor. He found that the biggest local economic bang was generated from security expenses ($38 million), then from hotels and the convention complex ($28 million each), the host committee's activities ($19 million), the retail and service sector ($17 million), transportation ($7 million) and hospitality ($6 million)."
  • "RNC's economic impact pegged at $170 million," Minnesota Public Radio, Aug. 28, 2009. "Dave Brennan, a marketing professor and co-director of the Center for Retailing Excellence at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, wrote the report. He spent three months following the money from the RNC."
  • “Wal-Mart tries new tack in grocery wars, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Sept. 1, 2009. Wal-Mart typically has avoided city centers, said Dave Brennan, co-director of the Institute for Retailing Excellence at the University of St. Thomas. "Land costs are high, pilferage is high, and they try to avoid unions and cities that dictate what they have to do."
  • Sports briefs, St. Paul Pioneer Press, Sept. 1, 2009. University of Minnesota men's basketball coach Tubby Smith headlines the second annual HoopsNet Twin Cities Basketball Coaches Clinic on Sept. 26 at Tartan High School in Oakdale. … Steve Fritz from the University of St. Thomas [is] among coaches that will conduct on-court demonstrations.
  • A picture of the Gabriel Kney pipe organ in the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquinas appears in the September issue of Pastoral Music Notebook, published by the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. See Page 7.
  • A performance on the Kney by Michael Ferguson of Duruflé's Fugue in C minor is featured on the Sept. 6 "Pipedreams" organ-music program on Minnesota Public Radio.
  • "GOP convention ends up with $7 million surplus," Brainerd Dispatch, Sept. 1, 2009. Here's an Associated Press story about the study by UST marketing professor Dr. Dave Brennan.
  • “Liturgical conference 'twas time for Advent, Christmas," Florida Catholic, Sept. 3, 2009.  " In his keynote presentation, “History, Mystery, Majesty,” Father J. Michael Joncas, composer and associate professor of Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., gave flesh to what Catholics celebrate."
  • "Editorial: State Fair reveals signs of the times," Star Tribune, Sept. 3, 2009. "Unusually long lines formed wherever there was a prospect of obtaining something useful for free. Word of free tote bags bearing University of St. Thomas logos created a queue that blocked traffic on Cosgrove Street."
  • "Nichols, Khaliq, Mahmoud: Instead of dogging TiZA, investigate what it's doing right," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Sept. 4, 2009. Among the writers of this commentary: Dr. Terence Nichols is a professor in the Department of Theology at the University of St. Thomas.
  • "Taking the Kids -- To College," Allentown (Pa.) Morning Call, Sept. 3, 2009. "Similar programs, I learn, are going on at colleges and universities around the country -- down to a freshman convocation at Tulane University complete with a traditional New Orleans brass band. 'Today's orientation programs are designed to help parents let go,' says Kris Getting Roach. She's a board member of the National Association for College Admission Counseling and director of admissions and Financial Aid at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. 'Trust them,' she urges." Note: This story, distributed by Tribune Media Services, also appeared in the Baltimore (Md.) Sun and on the Web sites of  KTLA-TV in Los Angeles, WHO-TV in Des Moines, WNEP-TV in Moosic, Pa., and WREG-TV in Memphis, Tenn.
  • Garrison Keillor's banter included talk about St. Thomas' purple totebags given away at the State Fair on his Sept. 5 broadcast of "A Prairie Home Companion." The reference is about 15 minutes into the show.
  • "Schools prepared as ground zero in battle against two flus this season," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Sept. 8, 2009. "The prevention dilemma is even greater at Minnesota's college campuses, where students will live, learn, eat and play sports in close quarters. Students in competitive athletics or academic programs such as the law school must resist the temptation to ignore symptoms, officials said. 'Part of it is the concern for each other,' said Madonna McDermott, director of student health services at the University of St. Thomas. 'As a community, we need to look out for the greater good.'"
  • "Guilt-free employment," Star Tribune, Sept. 5, 2009. " If you're planning to attend one of this year's Faith and Work Breakfasts, you probably won't want to make out the check with a pen you pilfered from your office. The theme for this year's gatherings, which are in year No. 15, is "Sin at Work: A Contemporary Look at Vice and Virtue in the Workplace." The meetings, held in St. Olaf Catholic Church in downtown Minneapolis, are sponsored by the church and the University of St. Thomas."
  • “Area roundup," Star Tribune, Sept. 6, 2009. "St. Thomas 54, Macalester 14: Sophomore Fritz Waldvogel returned two first-quarter punt returns for touchdowns to help the visiting Tommies (1-0) streak past Macalester (0-1) in the 94th meeting between the Summit Avenue schools."
