Phil Baumer, a senior at St. Thomas, ran in the Twin Cities marathon and qualified for the Boston marathon with a time of 2:58:30.
Stephen Brookfield, School of Education, recently published “Racializing Criticality in Adult Education,” in Adult Education Quarterly, Vol. 53, No. 3 (2003).
Dr. Tom Fish and Dr. Sarah Noonan, School of Education, made a presentation at the annual conference of the National Council of Professors of Educational Administration (NCPEA) in August 2003. Their presentation, “The Personal Leadership Narrative: Making the Bridge to Practice,” described how the personal leadership narrative serves as both a demonstration of program goals (NCATE) and as a vehicle (and bridge) for transforming theory into practice. Noonan also presented two additional sessions titled: “Leadership and Authenticity: The Life History Walk” and “The Elements of Leadership: A Framework.”
Dr. Camille George, Engineering and Technology Management, Dr. Elise Amel, Psychology Department, and Yvonne Ng, Mathematics and Computer Science, College of St. Catherine, are principal investigator and co-principal investigators, respectively, for the project "Forging New Alliances: A Plan to Enhance Mechanical Engineering Pedagogy as a Strategy for Improving Access," which has been awarded a $99,998 grant from the National Science Foundation. The grant proposes to open up the study of engineering to nonmajors, emphasizing active learning and collaborative inquiry. A major goal of the project is to develop and test innovative instructional approaches and to forge a path for women students at the College of St. Catherine to pursue engineering careers through a dual degree program.
George also led a breakout session, “Alternative Energy: Myths, Hopes, Realities,” at the Earth Charter Community Summit held Oct. 11-12 at the College of St. Catherine.
Dr. Mitchell Kusy, Organization Learning and Development Department, delivered a series of graduate seminars as one of the Distinguished Professors of Organization Development at Kiev Mohyla Business School in Kiev, Ukraine, in early October. Other distinguished professors who are colleagues of his in this series are from Princeton University, the Kellogg School at Northwestern University, and the Goizuetta Business School in Atlanta. Kusy's concentrations in these seminars were strategic planning that really works and leading in the future tense with results. He was invited back for another series of seminars in April 2004.
Dr. Sarah Noonan, School of Education, conducted a workshop over Labor Day weekend with the Sisters of Good Shepherd at their national center in St. Louis. The subject of the workshop was transformational leadership and “women’s ways” of leading. Spanish, English and French speaking sisters attended from various locations in the United States and Canada.
