Dr. John Conbere, Organization Learning and Development Department, was a featured presenter at the 2004 Symposium on Workplace Conflict Resolution: Designs for Success, held March 14-15 at the South Texas College of Law in Houston. The symposium was sponsored by the Institute for the Study of Conflict Transformation at Hofstra University School of Law and the South Texas School of Law. Drawing on experience managing a large federal conflict-management program and evaluation work he is leading for two federal agencies, Conbere discussed methods for institutionalizing programs, and design and use of evaluation for conflict-management programs.
Dr. Sharon Gibson, Organization Learning and Development Department, presented a paper, “Organizational Politics and Culture: An Essential Attribute of the Mentoring Experience for Women Faculty,” at the international research conference of the Academy of Human Resource Development March 4-7 in Austin, Texas. This paper also was published in the conference proceedings. In addition, Gibson served as chair of the symposium, “Graduate Student Research Skills.”
Father Jan Michael Joncas, Theology Department and Catholic Studies, is the author of “Introduction to ‘Fons Vitae: A Case Study in the Use of Liturgy as a Theological Source’ ” in Vision: The Scholarly Contributions of Mark Searle to Liturgical Renewal, edited by Anne Koester and Barbara Searle (Collegeville: The Liturgical Press, 2004), pages 202-207.
Dr. Ellen Kennedy, Service-Learning, spoke at Congregation Shir Tikvah in Minneapolis recently on the topic, “Jews of South Africa.” Her talk focused on the immigration story of Jews to that country in the late 1800s and their subsequent flight from South Africa in the turbulent post-apartheid years since 1994.
Dr. Larry McDonough, School of Law, dedicated his second CD of jazz piano and voice, “Tuscarora: Short Stories for Jazz Piano,” to the memory of the late Sen. Paul and Sheila Wellstone, and has performed his music at recent meetings of the Wellstone Book Club. The club is part of the Wellstone Civic Dialogue Project, a national reading of Paul Wellstone’s book, Conscience of a Liberal. McDonough knew the Wellstones for 20 years and continues to be involved with their family through Wellstone Action, a nonprofit organization dedicated to continuing Paul and Sheila Wellstone's fight for economic justice and progressive social change.
Dr. Thomas Redshaw, English Department and Center for Irish Studies, attended the Southern Regional Annual Meeting of the Association for Irish Studies March 4-7 at Emory University in Atlanta. The conference theme was “Real Ireland.” Redshaw chaired a panel, “Irish Landscapes,” and delivered a paper, “Liam Miller and ‘The Great Tain’ ” as part of a panel, “Archives and the Real.”
