Maggie Kendall, a St. Thomas senior geology major, has won the Brunton Award of the Association of Women Geologists. The award "promotes the future of field mapping and data acquisition for the upcoming generation of women geoscientists." Kendall worked on a research project studying the paleoecology of Patagonian lakes with Dr. Kevin Theissen, Geology Department, as well as on a similar project on lakes in northern Minnesota. Her work in field camp (GEOL 260, regional Geology and Geological Field Methods) and her active participation in collaborative research projects, along with her goal to receive a graduate degree in the geosciences, contributed to her selection for the award.
Dr. Melissa Lamb and Dr. Thomas Hickson, Geology Department, received a $15,000 EDMAP (Educational Component of the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program) grant from the U.S. Geological Survey to map a portion of the Bitter Spring 1:24,000-quadrangle map in southern Nevada. This grant will support both faculty and four geology students to travel to Nevada this summer to complete field mapping and data collection.

Later in the week, she spoke at the annual conference of Foundations and donors Interested in Catholic Activities (FADICA) Jan. 26-29 in Beverly Hills, Calif. Her address, based on a book she is writing about priests who minister as pastors of more than one parish, was titled "Serving Multiple Parishes: How Long Can This Last?"
