Dr. Douglas Bass, Graduate Programs in Software and Engineering, will present a paper, "Degree 3 Undirected Variations on the cube-Connected Cycles Network" at the International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Processing Techniques and Applications, held in conjunction with the 2001 International Multiconference June 25-28 in Las Vegas. Dr. Bonnie Holte Bennet and Dr. Saeed Rahimi, Graduate Programs in Software and Engineering, also will present papers at the conference.
Kirsten Dierking, O'Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center, was the keynote speaker at this year's conference of the Minnesota Coalition Against Sexual Assault. She also spoke at Gustavus Adolphus College's sexual assault awareness event and the Rochester crime victims' rally this spring. Dierking's newly published book of poems, One Red Eye, is based on her experience with and recovery from a 1983 rape. She also discussed the book on Wisconsin Public Radio and on KFAI radio.
Mev Miller, a student in the School of Education's doctoral program in critical pedagogy, has been awarded a $20,0000 Spencer Foundation dissertation fellowship for research related to education.
Only 35 fellows were chosen from among 535 applicants. The program encourages outstanding new scholars from many disciplines to bring their insights to bear on issues related to education. While the award will serve to support Miller as she finishes her dissertation, it also will enable her to become part of a research community. Fellows are invited to meet throughout the year, sharing the work with each other and with senior scholars.
Miller's dissertation topic is "Women's Literacy Power: Collaborative Approaches to Developing and Distributing Women's Resources." Earlier this year she received a grant from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. Miller, a 1977 graduate of the College of Notre Dame in Maryland, received the first Luann Dummer Graduate Research Fellowship from St. Thomas last year.
Dr. Nick Nissley, Organization Learning and Development Department, and Dr. Andrea Casey, of George Washington University, recently presented a paper, "Viewing Corporate Museums Through the Paradigmatic Lens of Organizational Memory: The Politics of the Exhibition," at the fourth International Conference on Organizational Learning and Knowledge Management at the University of Western Ontario.
An interview with Sister Katarina Schuth, O.S.F., School of Divinity, won first place in the "Best Interview" category of the 2001 Catholic Press Association Awards competition. The interview, "Preparing Tomorrow's Priests," by editor Karen Sue Smith, appeared in the fall 2000 issue of the journal, Church (Vol. 16, No. 3).
