Leigh Bartholomew, a School of Social Work graduate student, co-presented a paper, “Exploratory evaluation of Sí, Yo Puedo: A Culturally Competent Empowerment Program for Immigrant Latina Women in Group Settings,” in February at the 26th Annual Ethnographic and Qualitative Research Conference in Las Vegas.
Dr. Bernard Brady, Theology Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the author of an article, “On the Meaning of the ‘Catholic Intellectual Tradition,’” published in the Journal of Catholic Higher Education, 32:2, 2013, pp. 189-205.
Dr. J. Thomas Ippoliti, Chemistry Department, College of Arts and Sciences, gave an invited talk Jan. 23 at Bayer Material Sciences in Pittsburgh, Penn. The title of the presentation was “Kinetics of Model Amine Compounds With Cyclohexyl Isocyanate." The talk presented the results of a collaborative research project that was performed over the summer of 2013 with undergraduate student Mark Frommelt. The objective of this multiyear research project is to determine the mechanism by which Bayer polyurethane paints cure so fast in humid weather.
Dr. Anne Klejment, History Department, College of Arts and Sciences, was an invited speaker at a conference organized by St. Thomas University (Miami Gardens) on “Dorothy Day: A Saint for Our Time.” Klejment presented her sabbatical research in a session devoted exclusively to her project, “Dorothy Day’s Reception of Vatican II: A Historical Perspective.” At the conference, she and other members of board of the Dorothy Day Canonization Network met with George Horton, who represents the Archdiocese of New York’s Dorothy Day Guild, which is gathering evidence for her canonization to discuss how to move the process forward.
Dr. William Ojala, Chemistry Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the author of a paper, “Molecular Symmetry and Fluorine-Containing Supramolecular Synthons as Structure-Differentiating Agents in Some ‘Bridge-Flipped’ Isomeric bis-Benzylideneanilines,” which was accepted for publication in CrystEngComm, a journal published by the British Royal Society of Chemistry that focuses on the field of crystal engineering. The paper describes the structures of a series of crystalline organic compounds relevant to the question of whether the structures of crystals can be predicted based upon the structures of the molecules of which they are composed. Co-authors of the paper are UST student Jenna A. Johnson, former UST students Barjeta Balidemaj and Sarah N. Larson, and Ojala’s brother, Charles R. Ojala, an organic chemistry instructor at Normandale Community College.
Tom Oscanyan, Information Resources and Technologies, completed the National Contract Management Association's certification program for Commercial Contract Management.
Dr. Thomas Dillon Redshaw, emeritus professor of English, is the author of the lead essay in Peter Fallon, Poet Publisher, Editor and Translator (Irish Academic Press 2014). Peter Fallon is the proprietor of Gallery Books (1970- ), Ireland’s leading poetry publisher. Titled “The Dublin Arts Festival, 1970: Capella, The Book of Invasions, and the Original Gallery Books,” the essay explores the origins of Fallon’s press in the music scene and popular culture of Dublin after Dylan and The Beatles. Redshaw currently is writing a cultural history of Liam Miller’s Dolmen Press (1951-1987).
Dr. Gerald Schlabach, Theology Department, College of Arts and Sciences, spoke on "Christian Peace Theology: Internal Critique and Interfaith Dialogue" March 1 at the Nobel Peace Prize Forum held in the Twin Cities. He was joined by a host of those involved in justice and peace studies. The keynote speakers for the event were the Dali Lama and Sister Helen Prejean.
Sister Katarina Schuth, OSF, professor/endowed chair for the Social Scientific Study of Religion at The Saint Paul Seminary School of Divinity, is the author of an article, "Open to All: The Emerging Ecclesiology of Pope Francis," marking the one-year anniversary of the Holy Father’s pontificate," in America Magazine. On March 15, an interview with Schuth by Monsignor Kevin Sullivan was broadcast on Sirius XM’s Catholic Channel, discussing the article and Pope Francis’ vision for the church in the modern world. Sullivan is the executive director of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York and host of the weekly radio show “JustLove.”
Dr. Martin Warren, English Department, College of Arts and Sciences, gave a workshop, “The Inner Cave: Deepening Our Contemplative Practice,” Feb. 12, at the Institute for the Himalayan Tradition in St. Paul.
Dr. Christian Washburn, Saint Paul Seminary, School of Divinity, attended the fourth meeting of the 12th round of the U.S. Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue in Washington, D.C., held Feb. 20-23, where he delivered a paper titled “What Are the Conditions for Authentic Teaching by the Magisterium?"
