Rawlins Piano Trio and faculty recital on September concert calendar at St. Thomas

The University of St. Thomas Music Department welcomes the public to the free music performances listed below.  Both will be held on the university’s St. Paul campus.

  • 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, in Brady Educational Center auditorium: The University of South Dakota-based Rawlins Piano Trio will give a concert. The trio – Susan Keith Gray, piano; John Thomson, violin; and James Nixon “Nick” Curry, cello – has earned a reputation as a pre-eminent interpreter of American music. The trio has recorded three CDs (Albany Records) and frequently performs at national conventions of the Society for American Music. Each of the trio members teaches in the University of South Dakota Department of Music.
  • 8:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in the Chapel of St. Thomas Aquin as: Dr. James Callahan, of the St. Thomas Music Department faculty, will present a recital of his own compositions for the organ, assisted by percussionist Earl Yowell of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra. Callahan, who has taught at St. Thomas since 1968, has frequently performed throughout the Upper Midwest. His compositions have been performed by the Minnesota Orchestra, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and many St. Thomas ensembles and groups.

On the Sept. 19 program are Callahan’s “Prelude to the Introit for Easter Sunday” (2003), “Six Pieces Based on Gregorian Themes” (1962 and 1963), “Toccata - Veni Creator Spiritus” (1962), and “Triptych for Organ and Percussion” (1988). The recital also will feature the premiere of “The Four Elements,” a piece he composed this year.
