Two University of St. Thomas School of Education professors, Dr. Stephen Brookfield and Dr. John Holst, have been named the 2011 recipients of the Cyril O. Houle World Award for Literature in Adult Education for their book Radicalizing Learning: Adult Education for a Just World.
Dr. Stephen Brookfield
The award is given by the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education. It is considered the most important award for scholarship in the field of adult education because the books are evaluated and voted on strictly by peers.
Brookfield, who has won the award four times (1986, 1989, 1995 and 2004), is still elated to have won this year. “To me this is like winning an Oscar for Best Picture,” he said. “For me as a fifth-time winner it's enormously gratifying to think that over my career I haven't lost any credibility in my peers' eyes. I don't ever want to be just treading water intellectually − the Houle award tells me I've still 'got it'!”

Holst, on winning the Houle award for his first time, said he is “extremely honored … . Working with Stephen was an opportunity to engage in a true scholarly collaboration that was as much a process of co-writing the book as it was a process of co-learning from each other. While the award is a milestone for my career, working with Stephen has been a milestone for my development as a writer.”
Brookfield and Holst will receive the award on Nov. 4 at the AAACE Awards luncheon during the association’s annual conference in Indianapolis.
