Two UST magazines recognized at 2007 Minnesota Magazine and Publications Association Excellence Awards

Two St. Thomas magazines have won six awards in the 2007 Minnesota Magazine Publishers Association contest.

The awards included five for St. Thomas magazine and one for B., the magazine of the Opus College of Business. The awards were given out Thursday, Nov. 1.

St. Thomas magazine was in the "Association" category for magazines with a circulation of more than 30,000, and B. magazine was in the "Association" category for magazines with a circulation of less than 30,000.

The awards:

Overall Excellence: A bronze award for St. Thomas magazine (fall 2006, winter 2007 and spring 2007 issues).

Best Use of Visuals/Photography: A silver award to Sara Klomp for her St. Thomas magazine spring 2007 design featuring photographs taken by Roger Rich throughout his 37-year career as a St. Thomas photographer.

A bronze award also was given to Sara Klomp for the Table of Contents/Masthead design in the fall 2006 issue of St. Thomas magazine. The spread featured a photograph by Roger Rich of the John Ireland statue.

Best Feature Article: A silver to Doug Hennes for his winter 2007 St. Thomas magazine profile on I.A. O’Shaughnessy, titled “O’Shaughnessy, St. Thomas and the Bond of Loyalty.”

Best Regular Column: A bronze to Father Dennis Dease for his "Up Front" column in St. Thomas magazine, and a bronze to Brian Brown for his "Q&A" column in B. magazine.

St. Thomas alumni: In addition to awards given to the St. Thomas staff, two St. Thomas alumni, William Easton '05 and Jacob Schraufnagel '05, won awards for their magazine, Today's Groom. The magazine won a gold award for Best Feature Article and a gold award for Best Use of Visuals/Illustration, both in the “Special Interest, under 60,000 category.” Today’s Groom was first published in January 2006.
