Here's a roundup of recent St. Thomas mentions of interest in various media. Read the stories by clicking on the links. "Why You Should Get Your Holiday Shopping Done Early," WDAF-TV (Kansas City, Mo.), Nov. 3, 2009. "'My advice to shoppers, if you see a good special, I would take it early rather than waiting to think that it's going to be at a lower price later on, because chances are it's not going to be there,' said David Brennan, University of St. Thomas professor."

"Phys Ed: Why Doesn’t Exercise Lead to Weight Loss?" New York Times health blog, Nov. 4, 2009. “'Walking, even at a very easy pace, you’ll probably burn three or four calories a minute,' beyond what you would use quietly sitting in a chair, said Dan Carey, Ph.D., an assistant professor of exercise physiology at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota, who studies exercise and metabolism."

"St. Thomas Knights council dedicates pro-life memorial," The Catholic Spirit, Nov. 5, 2009.

"Going further in her faith," Marshall (Minn.) Independent, Nov. 5, 2009. "[Sarah] DeCock, a student at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul and the daughter of Bernie and Julie DeCock of Ghent, is currently going through a discernment process for entering religious vocations. Sarah said she hasn't decided whether she will become a nun, but so far the discernment has been a joyful experience."

"Iranian dancer reclaims her identity," Star Tribune, Nov. 5, 2009. "Leili Tajadod Pritschet has a story to tell. She'll tell it four times this weekend as part of the University of St. Thomas Sacred Arts Festival."

"Tax credit: Home buyers get a second chance," Star Tribune, Nov. 6, 2009. "'Building homes is not just an employment base for those who actually build them; it's an employment base for all of those that make all the materials that go into them,' said George Karvel, a real estate professor at the University of St. Thomas."

"Area school update: Saturday's games to watch," Star Tribune, Nov. 6, 2009. "St. Thomas (7-1, 6-1 MIAC) at Bethel (6-2, 5-2), 1 p.m. Both teams can keep their NCAA Division III playoff hopes alive with a victory. The Tommies, ranked No. 13 in the D-III poll, are coming a 42-3 victory over Augsburg in which they had 25 first yards and 519 yards of offense. The Tommies are averaging 40.9 points per game and have been held under 30 points only twice. Bethel has won five of its past six games -- the only loss was a two-point loss to St. John's. The Royals have given up only 117 points in eight games and have given up more than 20 points just twice. St. Thomas beat the Royals in last year's meeting 36-20 at home."

"Questions with Bob Sansevere," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Nov. 6, 2009. The sports columnist writes, "University of St. Thomas wide receiver/kick returner Fritz Waldvogel has returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown in the Tommies' past two games. He went 74 yards against Carleton, then 87 yards against Augsburg. On Sept. 5, he tied an NCAA record with two punt returns for touchdowns in one quarter. In his past 12 games, Waldvogel has had seven kickoff or punt returns of 55 yards or longer and that includes five for TDs. He is the NCAA Division III leader with four TD returns this season and is averaging 32.9 yards on kickoff returns and 14.9 yards on punt returns. Here is Waldvogel . . . "

"College football area roundup," St. Paul Pioneer Press, Nov. 7, 2009. "St. Thomas 19, Bethel 10: Senior cornerback Kris Kopp, a converted quarterback, intercepted a pass and recovered two fumbles to help the Tommies dominate the Royals in Arden Hills and improve to 8-1."

"Patrick Reusse: Winners borrow a few of Bethel's style points," Star Tribune, Nov. 8, 2009. "That was St. Thomas, with a 19-10 victory that included only six points (a Tommies touchdown) in a second half that included ball carriers taking thumps from four or five tacklers at the end of almost every try."

"War's 'Lost Boy' grows up to graduate from college," CNN.com, Nov. 9, 2009. "As for Kuol [Dut], he pursued his dream of becoming a Catholic priest by attending Divine Word College, a Catholic school in Epworth, Iowa. He later transferred to the University of St. Thomas, a Catholic college in St. Paul, Minnesota, graduating this May with a degree in theology and philosophy. Now 27, Kuol says he may try to earn a divinity degree and become a priest. Or he may seek work as a youth minister or teacher. He'd like to spend a year or two figuring out his future."

"Glenn Karwoski: The idea man," Star Tribune, Nov 9, 2009. "Karwoski has forged a unique resume over the past decade and a half, teaching a class on the creative process to graduate business communications students at the University of St. Thomas while running Minneapolis-based public relations firm Karwoski & Courage."

"Community notebook," Downtown Journal, Nov. 10, 2009. "Unique reunions at St. Thomas School of Law … On Nov. 12, a forum at the University of St. Thomas will introduce the four white-collar criminals to the judges and prosecuting attorneys who faced them in court. At 'Crime, Punishment and Redemption: Three Unique Reunions,' prosecutors who charged the cases will lead discussions between those convicted and the judges who sentenced them."

"Retailers still leasing up at Edina’s 50th & France," Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal, Nov. 6, 2009. "Neighborhood shopping districts such as 50th & France, Grand Avenue in St. Paul and Uptown in Minneapolis are better suited to weather the recession because they are unique destinations that draw shoppers from a wider area than typical malls, said Dave Brennan, co-director of the Institute for Retailing Excellence at the University of St. Thomas."
