Here's a roundup of recent St. Thomas mentions of interest in various media. Read the stories by clicking on the links.   • "Seminary honors priest, layman with 'distinguished alumni' award," The Catholic Spirit, May 19, 2010. "The St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity of the University of St. Thomas presented Distinguished Alumni Awards last week to seminary graduate Father Francis Pouliot and to an honorary alumnus, Wil­liam Reiling."
  • "Good Question: Do Motivational Speakers Work?" WCCO-TV, May 26, 2010. "'Typically, these events serve to energize people, but the results aren't very long lasting,' said University of St. Thomas social psychologist Jon Tauer."
  • "3 to be ordained as priests," Sioux Falls (S.D.) Argus Leader, May 27, 2010. "The Rev. Daniel Moris, 54, was born in St. Paul. He attended the University of Minnesota and the College of St. Thomas, where he received a bachelor's degree in sociology/criminal justice. … Those to be ordained as transitional deacons: … Kristopher Cowles, 25, was born in Yankton. Cowles attended a year at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology before entering the seminary. He graduated from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, with bachelor's degrees in philosophy and Catholic studies. … Anthony Urban, 25, was born in Sioux Falls. Urban attended Catholic elementary and high schools. He attended St. John Vianney Seminary and the University of Saint Thomas majoring in philosophy and minoring in Catholic studies.
  • "Good Question: 'Reply All' To Your Good Questions," WCCO-TV, May 28, 2010. "Local colleges say they do budget money for speakers. At the University of St. Thomas, a spokesman said the goal is to provide a 'memorable moment' for students as they graduate. For a big name, they will pay a speakers fee."
  • Charley Walters' column, St. Paul Pioneer Press, May 29, 2010. The sports columnist writes, "The University of St. Thomas and University of Texas were the only schools among nearly 1,000 in Division I, II and III this year to win at least 10 football games, 20 basketball games (men's and women's teams), 35 baseball games, 35 softball games and 25 volleyball matches."

  • "Exiting St. Paul police chief joins state Senate race," St. Paul Pioneer Press, June 2, 1020. "A 33-year veteran of the St. Paul Police Department, [John] Harrington has continued his education throughout his police career, including earning his master's degree in education from the University of St. Thomas. He also has taught courses at Metro State University, helping develop the school's four-year law enforcement degree, and at one point pursued a doctorate."
  • "Creighton survey signals new growth in economy," Star Tribune, June 1, 2010. "[Creighton University economics Prof. Ernie Goss] and other economists from Wells Fargo and the University of St. Thomas noted that the European Union's trillion-dollar bailout of Greece and the financial woes of Spain, Portugal, Italy and Ireland have caused the euro to fall and the U.S. dollar to rise. That scenario makes U.S. farm and manufactured products more expensive, threatens U.S. exports and increases the sale of U.S. Treasury bonds."
  • "Mover: Scott Plum," St. Paul Pioneer Press, June 1, 2010. The St. Thomas alumnus is market manager for Minnesota for Madison, Wis.-based TDS Telecommunications Corp.
  • "Paul Schnell's biography," Hastings Star Gazette, June 1, 2010. Schnell has been selected Hastings' next chief of police. He earned his B.A. in social work at St. Thomas in 1988.
  • "European financial crisis hits close to home," Star Tribune, June 2, 2010. "But the pain won't show up right away, said Fred Zimmerman, a manufacturing expert and former University of St. Thomas professor. 'The decline in the value of the euro will no doubt decrease the earnings of some [firms] like 3M. ... But I don't think that will be a big deal. It will be somewhere in 2011 that we will be pissing and moaning about this,' he said. He cited a St. Thomas study that showed it takes about 18 months before the impact of a currency devaluation shows up. That's because companies usually hedge against negative currency changes by locking in prices on future supplies. So for companies, 'there are so many things in the pipeline that are based on historical prices,' Zimmerman said."

'And now we know maybe they weren't so happy.'"She said there are more baby boomers getting divorced than ever before, because there simply are more baby boomers out there. In the environment blog of the Guardian, a British national newspaper, Dr. John Abraham of the St. Thomas School of Engineering responds to a Minnesota speech by a British climate-change skeptic, Christopher Monkton, who was a policy adviser to Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the 1980s.
