Ever heard Japanese taiko drumming? Get your chance right here at St. Thomas.

Multicultural Student Services and STAR invite you to a performance by Mu Daiko, a nine-member professional taiko ensemble based in Minneapolis. Hear Mu Daiko and enjoy Japanese food from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, in O'Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.

The event anticipates the May celebration of Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month, which calls attention to the more than 12 million Asians and Pacific Islanders who live in the United States.

Taiko drumming has origins in the earliest Japanese communities where it was part of daily life and rituals. In North America today, taiko has become a dynamic performance art of musical drumming based on traditional Japanese styles and techniques. It’s loud, strenuous, pulsating and adrenaline-packed.

Mu Performing Arts is the nation's third-largest pan-Asian performing arts organization in the United States. In addition to the Mu Daiko, it is home to Theater Mu, an Asian-American theater company. Mu Performing Arts also offers taiko drumming lessons.
