Benefit planned Nov. 29 for Alex Schulte

Benefit planned Nov. 29 for Alex Schulte

A big event from 3 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at Spring Lake Park High School will benefit Alex Schulte, who had planned to begin his first year and play soccer at St. Thomas this fall.

Schulte, 18, was critically injured in a head-on collision July 1 in Forest Lake. He had a severe brain injury, 17 broken bones and a collapsed lung; during a 22-day stay at North Memorial Medical Center he underwent 13 different surgeries. He spent 40 days in a coma and began the long process of recovery, first at Bethesda Hospital, then at Courage Center. He finally went home on Oct. 31 and continues physical, occupational, speech and recreational therapy.

You're invited to the fun evening Schulte's family and friends have planned the Saturday after Thanksgiving. There's a chicken dinner donated by Joe Senser's from 6 to 8 p.m., you can register for a poker tournament that's scheduled from 4 to 10 p.m., and there's a silent auction, raffle prizes and other games and activities.  Tickets are $15 for adults ($30 if participating in the poker tournament), $10 students and free for kids 10 and under. Monetary and prize donations are welcome; call (651) 213-1333.

All proceeds from the benefit will help cover Schulte's medical expenses, which are "staggering," according to the benefit's organizers. With your help, he'll be able to receive the care he needs and eventually start college at St. Thomas.

Contributions to the benefit fund are welcome, too. Send a check to: The Kendall Howard Alex Schulte Fund, 10152 Liberty Lane, Chisago City, MN 55013.
