Dr. Andrew Scheiber, chair of UST’s English Department, will speak on Friday, March 19, at the next event in the English Department Colloquium Series. His topic is “‘I Don’t Worry About a Thing Because I Know Nothing’s Gonna Be All Right': the Blues Aesthetic as Equipment for Living in the 21st Century."
The colloquium will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. in the O’Shaughnessy Room (Room 108) of the O’Shaughnessy-Frey Library Center. Students, faculty and staff are invited.
One of the distinctive contributions African Americans have made to American and global culture, the entity called “the blues,” has transcended its original cultural and genre categories. It has become something both more and less than a particular musical form marked by 12-measure harmonic units and so-called “blue notes.” It is now understood as a particular kind of artistic process that itself reflects a distinctive worldview and orientation to experience.
Scheiber’s presentation will discuss the relationship between form, artistic method and worldview in the blues, and will suggest some of the productive projections of “the blues aesthetic” into African American literature and into the wider culture.
