Please remember in your prayers Monsignor Richard Schuler, a longtime former pastor at St. Agnes Catholic Church in St. Paul, founder of the Twin Cities Catholic Chorale and a former faculty member at St. Thomas.
Schuler, 86, died April 20 at North Memorial Residential Hospice in Brooklyn Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 7 p.m. today, April 24, at St. Agnes, 548 Lafond Ave. The funeral will feature a performance of Mozart's Requiem.
A news obituary in Saturday's Star Tribune called Schuler, who taught music and theology at the College of St. Thomas from 1955 to 1969, "a passionate champion of classical liturgical music and orthodox Catholic culture."
A graduate of DeLaSalle High School in Minneapolis, he majored in English at the College of St. Thomas before entering the St. Paul Seminary. He received a master's degree in music theory from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., then studied music history in Rome on a Fulbright grant. He received a doctorate in musicology from the University of Minnesota in 1963.
