Dr. Jean Birbilis, Graduate School of Professional Psychology, is the author of a chapter, "Maintaining and Sustaining Independent Practice: Midcareer Strategies for Psychologists," in Handbook for Success in Independent Practice (2005), edited by J.E. Barnett and M. Gallardo. The chapter results from work during Birbilis' spring sabbatical.

Dr. Kenneth Goodpaster, Koch Endowed Chair in Business Ethics, is the author of an essay, "Examining the Conscience of the corporation," published in a 2005 book, The Accountable Corporation (Vol. 2: Business Ethics), edited by Marc Epstein and Kirk Hanson. Goodpaster also chaired a session and spoke as one of the founders at the 25th anniversary meeting of the Society for Business Ethics Aug. 3-7 in Honolulu.

Mark Jensen, University Relations, recently exhibited an original print, "Victualler, Tipperary Town, County Tipperary," at the Hopkins Center for the Arts' Aug. 13-Sept. 4 Salon 300 exhibition. Jensen's portraits of independent retail business owners are highlighted in the recently published book Twin Cities Album (Minnesota Historical Society Press, 2005), by David Kenney. The book is a 150-year photographic retrospective of Twin Cities life. Included with Jensen's photographs is a portrait of the artist taken by his daughter Anna. Dr. Meg Wilkes Karraker, Sociology and Criminal Justice Department, organized a session, "Global Community and commitment: Minnesota Sociologists on Cross-Cultural and Inter-Societal Teaching," at the annual meetings of the Sociologists of Minnesota Oct. 5-7 in St. Louis Park. Dr. Ellen Kennedy, Service-Learning, and Dr. Susan Smith-Cunnien, Sociology and Criminal Justice Department, presented papers, titled "The Changing Faces of Minnesota: Teaching a Global Perspective" and "Individual Students, Senior Majors and Faculty: Everyone Learns More Through Comparison," respectively. Smith-Cunnien also was selected as the organization's Distinguished Sociologist of the year.

Dr. Mark Neuzil, Journalism and Mass Communication Department, led a discussion, "Katrina and the Corps," featuring Mark Schliefstein of the New Orleans Times-Picayune and Mike Dunne and Amy Wold of the Baton Rouge Herald and other journalists covering the hurricane. The discussion was part of the annual conference of the Society of Environmental Journalists Sept. 30 in Austin, Texas.

Dr. Mary Reichardt, Catholic Studies and English Department, was visiting scholar in Catholic studies for several days in September at St. Paul's College of the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada. Reichardt lectured for literature classes, conducted faculty discussions and delivered a public lecture, "Catholic Literature and the Catholic Imagination."
