Five St. Thomas English majors presented papers and creative writing at the annual Associated Colleges of the Twin Cities (ACTC) English Majors Conference, held Friday, Feb. 18, at Macalester College. The five students and their essay/creative writing titles were as follows:
- Kathleen Geraghty (British Literature): "Unsuccessful Friendships and the Evaluation of Self in Jane Austen's Emma"
- Simrat Kang (American Literature): "Amiri Baraka and James Baldwin: Masculinity as Cultural Representation and Protest"
- Nathaniel Brown (World/Multicultural Literature): "Race, Violence, and Inner Conflict: Character Representations of Black Consciousness in If He Hollers Let Him Go and Devil in a Blue Dress"
- Connor Gallagher (Media/Theory): "A Walking, Waking Nightmare: Images of Modern America in AMC's The Walking Dead"
- Erin Hagen (Creative Writing): "Beneath the Waves" (Fiction)
Dr. Vanessa Cornett-Murtada, Music Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the author of three chapters in the book Creative Piano Teaching, Fourth Edition, ed. Lyke et. al. (Stipes 2011). The chapters are “Performance Anxiety Management,” “A Short History of Piano Pedagogy in the United States,” and “The National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy.” Creative Piano Teaching has been one of the most popular and respected piano pedagogy textbooks for more than 30 years.
Dr. David Kelley, Geography Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the co-author of a book chapter, “Spatial Ramifications of Crop Selection: Water Quality and Biomass Energy," published in the textbook GIS Applications in Agriculture, Volume Two: Nutrient Management for Energy Efficiency (CRC Press, 2011).
Dr. Mark Neuzil, Communication and Journalism Department, College of Arts and Sciences, and Office for Mission, is the author of a book essay of two works: “Climate Change and the Media” and “Environmental Reporters in the 21st Century.” The essay appeared in the winter 2011 issue of Journalism History (36:4).
Dr. Mary Reichardt, Catholic Studies Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the author of a new critical edition of Herman Melville's Moby-Dick in Ignatius Press' Critical Editions series. The volume includes Reichardt's introduction, extensive new textual notes, and several historical and critical essays. Reichardt's previous volumes in the critical editions series include The Scarlet Letter, Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Uncle Tom's Cabin. More information can be found here.
Dr. Deborah Savage, St. Paul Seminary School of Divinity, gave a talk, “Women’s Work,” at the Faith and Work Breakfast at St. Olaf Catholic Church on Feb. 17. The talk was an exploration of the effects of women taking a prominent role in the modern workplace on family life, our culture – and women themselves. The well-known breakfast series is now in its second decade and is co-sponsored by St. Olaf’s and the John A. Ryan Institute for Catholic Social Thought at the University of St. Thomas.
