Dr. Shahid Alvi, Sociology Department, presented a paper, "Poverty Amidst Plenty: Results From a Study of Concentrated Urban Poverty in a Canadian City," at the Convegno Internazionale, " Disoccupazione e Povertà: Cause e Rimedi" (International Symposium "Unemployment and Poverty: Cuases and Remedies") sponsored by the United Nations as part of the celebrations of the Jubilee of Universities in Rome, Italy. Alvi also is the co-author of an article, "The Role of Profeminist Men in Dealing With Woman Abuse on the Canadian College Campus," in the journal, Violence Against Women.
Lisa Haberstroh, Nancy Norris-Weber, Rochelle Brecheisen and Amy Hering, UST Child Development Center, will present a workshop at the annual conference of the Minnesota Association for the Education of Young Children Oct. 6. Titled "Infant Interest Areas for the Creative Curriculum," the workshop will demonstrate how room arrangement can engage children in play, and how carefully designed interested areas can foster developmental skills in attachment, socialization, dramatic play and problem-solving.
Dr. Fred Zimmerman, Manufacturing Systems and Engineering Department, was invited to attend the Economic Summit sponsored by the University; afterwards, he participated in a question-and-answer session on KTCA-TV, Channel 2. In his comments he stressed the fact that Minnesota private colleges provide half of the state's science and math graduates. Last month Zimmerman spoke on "Minnesota's Preparedness in the International Business Arena" to the Minneapolis City of Lakes Rotary Club. He and Dave Beal, business columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press, are writing a book about the topic.
