Dr. Ellen Kennedy, Marketing Department and service-learning coordinator, and Faculty Advisory Board for Service-Learning members Dr. Richard Raschio, Modern and Classical Languages, and Dr. Tim Scully, Communication Department, spoke about service-learning at the annual meeting of the Minnesota College Personnel Association. Kennedy described UST institutional goals and structures for service-learning and talked about several initiatives: entire sevice-learning courses, interdisciplinary service-learning projects and projects with multiple academic disciplines and multiple community partners. Raschio described the Spanish course, Hispanic Themes, in which students work with students and staff at the Adams Spanish Immersion School in St. Paul. Scully spoke about his Videography class, which produces publicservice announcements for UST clients each semester. He also described an upcoming project, in which he will pair an Advanced Videography class with a Justice and Peace Studies course on civil rights next spring; both classes will travel to Selma, Ala., over spring break to learn more about the Civil Rights Movement and its aftermath, with the Videography class recording the experience.

Kennedy also led a workshop at the recent meeting of the National Society for Experiential Education. The workshop, "Assessing Service-Learning: Evaluating Students, Faculty, Community Partners and Institutions," described the multilevel assessment currently being undertaken at St. Thomas. Students in the Marketing 340 course, Marketing Research, are interviewing key administrators, surveying students and community partners, and talking to faculty to determine the extent to which "best practices" in service-learning are part of institutional efforts.
