Coach Tom Hodgson's blue-collar men's swimming and diving team – which used three different practice facilities this season – outscored two MIAC heavyweight swim programs and finished the season as the one team hoisting the championship trophy.
Hodgson's crew rode a Tommie Tsunami wave to claim the school's first MIAC championship since 1954. St. Thomas finished with 709 points to Gustavus Adolphus College's 701 in one of the closest finishes in conference history. St. Olaf placed third at 615.5.
The Tommie men won 10 of 20 events over three days and got scoring from 19 athletes. More than half of their 519 individual points (274) came from nine freshmen.
