"What Did You Do For BUS200?" Still Need to Complete BUS200? Attend the Service Site Fair from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, in Room 100, McNeely Hall.
Perhaps you worked with an agency involved in medical research, such as the American Cancer Society or the American Lung Association. Maybe you assisted them in their marketing efforts or fundraising. Maybe you tutored a fourth grader who was just learning English, or maybe you did an efficiency study with a food shelf and saved them thousands of dollars in truck-repair costs. Maybe you were one of the students who completed income taxes for folks living in poverty and your service meant a tax return that increased their annual income by more than 40 percent. Did you teach Sunday school or provide leadership at a summer camp? Did you coach swimming to physically challenged kids or provide day care so low-income moms were able to return to school? Perhaps your service was organizing a book drive for a school in need of a library. Or maybe your service was completed while in China, Spain, Uganda, Mexico or Australia.
Whatever your BUS200 involvement, your service made a difference! You served in one of the more than 1,900 organizations with whom we have partnered since 2004, when we started to keep electronic databases. If you completed your service during the past two years, your efforts were part of more than 1,425 students who provided 57,500 hours of service in our local community, throughout Minnesota and in more than 13 countries throughout the world. If taxpayers would have paid for those services within our communities – even at just minimum wage – they would have had to pay more than $415,000 for the work you did! What you have done individually and collectively is amazing!
If you haven’t yet begun BUS200, now is a great time to start. Students are encouraged to begin BUS200 during their sophomore or junior years. Since you do not need to complete BUS200 in one semester, you would do well to attend an Opening Learning Seminar and locate a service site, and do a few hours of service this semester. Then continue to do your service at a pace that works well for both you and your service site.
