'Women Artists in the Jewish and Christian Traditions' exhibit at Basilica till June 28

"Interpretations of Faith: Women Artists in the Jewish and Christian Traditions," an exhibit featuring art by eight women -- four each from Judaism and Christianity – has opened and will run through Sunday, June 28, at the Basilica of Saint Mary.

The exhibit, free and open to the public, is on display in the John XXIII Gallery and Teresa of Calcutta Hall, located in the lower level of the Basilica. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturdays and 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. Tours can be arranged at other times. The Basilica is located on Hennepin Avenue at N. 16 th Street.

The eight artists, all from the Twin Cities, share reflections of their faiths through painting, watercolor, sculpture, mixed media, handmade paper, inks, gouache, colored pencil, oil pastel and cut paper.

The artists are Robyn Stoller Awend, Kirsten Malcolm Berry, Joan Bohlig, Carolyn Brunelle, Leah Golberstein, Renanah (Rani) Halpern, Lynda Monick- Isenberg and Lucinda Naylor.

They will be featured at a reception and panel discussion that will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 11, at the Basilica.

"The exhibition, accompanying conversation and relationships will be a celebration of our differences and our commonalities," said Kathy Dhaemers, associate director of sacred arts at the Basilica. "The arts, in general, are a shared form of human communications and sacred arts, in particular, have played an important historic role in the life of many religions.

"Artists help us to see stories in new ways and provide a lens through which we can see ourselves more clearly, allowing us to communicate our understanding in ways that cannot be expressed otherwise.

"May this wonderfully rich and diverse sacred art be a medium for awareness, appreciation, mutual respect, and understanding among religions and communities," Dhaemers said.

Co-sponsors of the exhibit are WomenSpirit, the Jay Phillips Center for Interfaith Learning of St. John’s University and the University of St. Thomas, Luther Seminary, United Theological Seminary and The Basilica of Saint Mary.
