Monsignor James Lavin ’40 is remembered by many as the “peanut butter priest.” For decades, he handed out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, also known as “Lavin Burgers,” to residence hall students one or two evenings a week.
Since his death in 2012, a new Tommie Tradition has begun to take place each year on Nov. 12. On what would have been his 95th birthday, the St. Thomas community is invited to celebrate Monsignor Lavin Day with complimentary peanut butter and jelly sandwiches from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday in Scooter’s, the restaurant bearing the beloved priest’s nickname, located on the first floor of the Anderson Student Center.
