Surrounded by fuel tankers, tow trucks and large shipments of Cheez-Its, Jake Manske '25 grew up in the thick of a family business. It's no surprise that family means everything to him. Over his four years on the St. Thomas campus, Manske has worked to create a Tommie family, which has supported him in very real ways.

GHR Fellows Expand Global Perspectives on J-Term Journey to Ghana

While many in Minnesota spent January braving the cold, 20 students from the GHR Fellows program enjoyed three weeks in Ghana's warm, vibrant climate. There, they immersed themselves in a rich new culture, visited various businesses and cultural sites, and had the unique opportunity to attend the inauguration of Ghana's new president.

Graduating Tommies: Apply to be a Commencement Speaker

Undergraduate students graduating in May 2025 are invited to submit a speech that, if chosen, will be delivered at one of the three undergraduate commencement ceremonies. Applications, including your video-recorded speech, must be submitted by Sunday, April 6, 2025.

President Rob Vischer Elected to ACCU Board of Directors

University of St. Thomas President Robert K. Vischer has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU). Vischer, who in 2023 was appointed the 16th president in St. Thomas' 140-year history – is one of five member presidents selected to serve a first term on the board through 2028.

The 2025 Good Trouble Legacy Scholarship nominations are now being accepted! Dr. Neil Garg, distinguished professor of chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles, will speak on campus about "Transforming Organic Chemistry Education Through Community and Innovation." The Chemistry Larson Lecture for general audiences will be held on Thursday, March 6 at 7:30 p.m. in OEC Auditorium. A more technical presentation will take place Friday, March 7, in Owens Science Hall 150 at 12:15 p.m.

Lenten Small Groups
The Ignatian Lenten Small Groups provide guided spiritual reflection, discussion and prayer for students, faculty and staff throughout the Lenten season. Sponsored by the Ignatian Spirituality Center, these small groups will take place weekly on the St. Paul campus on Wednesdays March 12- April 30 at noon in Iversen Center for Faith, LL13. Minneapolis campus also offers small groups on Tuesdays, March 11- April 30 at noon in MSL 242 (Law School). Sign up by Friday, March 7, to participate!

April 6-11: Attend the Culture of Encounter Ideas Festival

The Culture of Encounter Ideas Festival will bring together community members, global thinkers, students, and cultural enthusiasts to engage diverse perspectives, foster cross-cultural dialogue, and build leadership for the common good. The festival, hosted on the St. Thomas campus April 6-11, takes its inspiration from Pope Francis' concept of a culture of encounter, which emphasizes truly seeing, listening, and being present with others to build relationships.

The week will feature workshops, symposiums, film screenings, and storytelling events. Kicking things off will be a special concert with vocalist and conductor J.D. Steele and writer-musician Ahmed Ismail Yusuf.

April 22: Examine Sacred Scripture at John Ireland Lecture

The Saint Paul Seminary's Spring 2025 Archbishop John Ireland Lecture will feature renowned scripture scholar Dr. Mary Healy. In her talk, Healy will examine the signs of a current biblical renewal, and the implications of recovering the understanding of biblical authority held in early and medieval Christianity. The lecture, "Unsheathing the Sword: Reclaiming the Authority of Sacred Scripture", is Tuesday, April 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the O'Shaughnessy Educational Center Auditorium.

Dr. Jacob Benda, director of music, liturgy and sacred arts and organ area professor, recently visited Boğazici University in Istanbul, Turkey, after the restoration of an historic organ. Benda is the first American organist to have played in concert on this organ, which had not been heard in concert for over 25 years prior to the restoration.

Amy Cooper, senior athletic director and women's administrator, received the 2025 Wilma Rudolph Courage Award and was celebrated with other recipients on Feb. 5 at the Minnesota History Center.

Dr. Yohuru Williams, distinguished University Chair and founding director of the Racial Justice Initiative at the University of St. Thomas, appeared in the PBS documentary Great Migrations: A People on the Move, hosted by historian Henry Louis Gates Jr.

Media Highlights:

Law Professor Rachel Moran is quoted in a Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article about the public's right to information regarding police officers who commit ethical or criminal violations. The article, which was published on Wisconsin Watch, also discusses officers facing credibility concerns and allegations of dishonesty or bias.

Dr. Tyler Schipper, an associate professor of economics at the College of Arts and Sciences, appeared on WCCO-TV to discuss the new tariffs that President Trump's administration recently put in place on goods from Mexico and Canada.

Dr. Johnny Tauer, head coach of the men's basketball team, and student-athlete Drake Dobbs were featured in a piece on FOX 9 highlighting the Tommies' successful season ahead of their trip to the Summit League Championships.

The Tommie Basketball teams won their final games in Schoenecker Arena this past week. The Minnesota Star Tribune featured their recent winning streak and previewed their new home in the Lee & Penny Anderson Arena.
