School of Engineering undergraduate students, working with Dr. AnnMarie Thomas, presented posters on their work at the 2010 International Computer Human Interaction conference in Atlanta, Ga.

  • Joseph Nesbitt presented a poster on his paper “Bridging the Digital Divide One Tweet at a Time: Twitter-Enabled Devices for Family Communication”
  • Samuel Johnson presented a poster on his paper “Squishy Circuits: A Tangible Medium for Electronics Education.”

Nesbitt’s and Thomas’ work also is featured their article “1+2+3: Sculpting Circuits,” published in Make: magazine, vol. 22.

Mark Jensen, University Relations, created a portfolio, "Holiday Victuallers," which was acquired for the permanent collection of the National Photographic Archives of the National Library of Ireland in Dublin. Made primarily in villages and small towns on the west coast of the Republic of Ireland, the portfolio is comprised of 20 portraits of butchers in their shops, seen with their holiday décor in place. One of Jensen's photographs, the Park family at the First Oriental Grocery in Duluth, will appear in a collection of essays from a conference about Minnesota at its sesquicentennial. The photo, taken as part of the Minnesota Historical Societies' MN2000 project, illustrates a prose poem about Duluth by Louis Jenkins in the book The State We’re In: Reflections on Minnesota History, edited by Annette Atkins and Deborah Miller, soon to be published by MHS Press. Also, a number of Jensen's photographs, including one on the cover composite, appear in the recently published You Can't Do That: Marv Davidov, Nonviolent Revolutionary, Nodin Press, 2009, written by local poet and author Carol Masters and Marv Davidov. Additionally, Jensen, attended and participated as a portfolio reviewer for both students and professionals at the 47th national conference of the Society for Photographic Education March 4-7 in Philadelphia, Pa.

Todd LawrenceDr. Todd Lawrence, English Department, College of Arts and Sciences, has been selected to participate in a seminar on “Slave Narratives” offered by the Council of Independent Colleges, the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and The United Negro College Fund. Twenty-eight participants were selected from more than 100 highly competitive nominations for the seminar, to be held June 13-16 at the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University in New Haven, Conn.

T. Dean Maines, president of the SAIP Institute, and Arnold Weimerskirch, executive fellow at the SAIP Institute, lectured on corporate ethics and accountability, and their work with assessing ethical organizational conduct to faculty and students at the University of Pannonia and Corvinus University in Hungary. The University of Pannonia is the oldest agricultural university in Europe. Corvinus University, also known as the Budapest University of Economic Sciences, is one of Europe’s leading business schools. 

Ry Siggelkow, Theology Department, College of Arts and Sciences, is the author of a review of Daniel M. Bell Jr.'s Just War as Christian Discipleship. His review, titled "Just War is Not Christian Discipleship," was published in The Other Journal.
