Associate professor Michael O’Donnell has been appointed chair of the Communication and Journalism Department.

O’Donnell, who came to St. Thomas in 1999, has taught a wide range of course, including Introduction to Communication and Journalism I, Visual Communication, Writing and Designing for the Web, Design Concepts in Communication, Magazine Writing, and Editing. He is a co-author of The Editor’s Toolbox (Blackwell), a textbook on editing, with Buck Ryan of the University of Kentucky.

O'Donnell also serves as teaching chair for the Visual Communication Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication.

His professional experience includes 25 years as a sports reporter, editor and page designer at papers such as the St. Paul Pioneer Press, the Chicago Tribune and the Quad-City Times of Davenport, Iowa.

He succeeds Dr. Wendy Wyatt, who has been appointed associate vice provost for undergraduate studies at the university.
