Five University of St. Thomas theologians will discuss the first months of Pope Francis as head of the Roman Catholic Church in a panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, in the auditorium of the O’Shaughnessy Educational Center on the university’s St. Paul campus.
The program, “The Church of Francis: Discussion on the Beginning of a Pontificate,” is sponsored by the St. Thomas Theology Department and is free and open to the public.
Dr. Michael Hollerich, an early church historian, will moderate the program. The panelists and their theological fields are Dr. Corrine Carvalho, Old Testament and Hebrew Bible; Dr. Paul Wojda, moral theology; Dr. Massimo Faggioli, modern church history; and Dr. John Martens, New Testament.
“After the surprising resignation of Benedict XVI, the conclave elected Pope Francis on March 13, 2013,” commented Faggioli, one of the organizers of the panel discussion. “Since then, Francis surprised many Catholics and non-Catholics with his style, his language, and his view of the church."
