Schoenecker Center Earns LEED Gold for Green Construction

St. Thomas Celebrates Second-Largest Undergraduate Class in 20 Years

Students, staff, faculty, family and supporters gather for the annual March Through the Arches event on September 3, 2024, in St. Paul.
The University of St. Thomas welcomed 1,591 first-time, first-year students to campus this fall, the second-largest undergraduate class in two decades at Minnesota's largest private university. The total represents a 4% year-over-year increase, helping to propel St. Thomas' total student population to a four-year high of 9,445.

Remembering Former St. Thomas Trustee Al McQuinn

University of St. Thomas Trustee Emeritus Al McQuinn, a visionary businessman, philanthropist and innovator known for his leadership in agricultural technology, passed away Oct. 23 at the age of 93. For decades, McQuinn and his wife, Mary Agnes, demonstrated leadership and commitment to St. Thomas.

Diwali Starts Oct. 31

Diwali, a five-day holiday celebrated worldwide by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists, starts Thursday, Oct. 31. The name Diwali is derived from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning Line of Lamps. During the festival of lights, houses, shops, public places and shrines are often decorated with lights. These symbolize the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. Here's to a joyous occasion. Learn more about Diwali through the St. Thomas library.

Remember to Vote on Nov. 5
Election Day is approaching and it's important as an American citizen of voting age to exercise your right to vote. In addition to casting a vote for U.S. president, you have the opportunity to vote for U.S. senator, U.S. representative, your state representative, judicial candidates and other local offices and referendums. Find your polling place.

Dessa at St. Thomas! Don't Miss Out

Finding Forward and the Luann Dummer Center for Women welcome Grammy-winning artist, author and Minnesota native Dessa for a conversation about the power of storytelling, and much more.

Her new book, Bury The Lede: A Cocktail Book, features essays about artist collaborations encased between drink recipes, demonstrating the alchemy behind bringing different ingredients together to create something wholly new.

Dessa will read from her new book, followed by a conversation with Luann Dummer Center for Women Director Dr. Elizabeth Wilkinson. This Finding Forward event takes place Nov. 20 at 7 p.m. in O'Shaughnessy Educational Center auditorium.

Open Enrollment Underway for Staff, Faculty

Staff and faculty are encouraged to participate in 2025 benefits open enrollment which is underway through Friday, Nov. 8. This year, open enrollment is passive, meaning you are not required to participate if you wish to keep your benefit selections the same for next year. However, you will still need to elect any FSA or HSA contributions. Several new benefits, such as identity theft and accident insurance, are also available to consider.

Dr. April Eichmeier, assistant professor of emerging media at the College of Arts and Sciences, spoke with the Financial Times about how Gen Z's quick, authentic online interactions are changing political campaigns in 2024.

Phil Esten, vice president and director of athletics, spoke with WCCO Radio about the NCAA potentially reducing the university's provisionary period, which would allow student-athletes to compete in postseason play sooner than expected after the school's transition to Division I.

Dr. Tim Lynch, assistant professor of political science at the College of Arts and Sciences, spoke with WCCO Radio about the potential leadership changes in Minnesota if Gov. Tim Walz becomes vice president.

Dr. Yohuru Williams, distinguished university chair and founding director of the Racial Justice Initiative, recently published a joint op-ed in the Star Tribune about how nearly five years since the murder of George Floyd, momentum around racial justice has largely waned.
